The Break-up: It's Not You, It's Me
I think we need to spend some time apart. It's not you, it's me. I'm at a point in my life where I need a change, I need something new. I think I've gotten the most I can out of this relationship -- I'm realizing I need more. You've been great, though, really. I have so many wonderful memories of our time together, all the fun I had, and how much you taught me. I have no regrets, and I hope we'll stay in touch and always be friends.
And someday, you're going to make another associate very, very happy.
And with that, I'm leaving the firm -- and firm life in general -- and starting a new job with the Biggest Employer of People in This Region (hint: it ain't private industry). I'm excited and sick to my stomach all at the same time. I really love the people I work with, and I like much of the work that I do. And I nearly cried when I had to break the news to those at work I'm closest to. I feel like I'm letting them down, and in some respects, I know I am. But the people I work with -- the good ones, anyway -- understand completely my reasons for leaving. And it really is a good time for me to try something new. I found what I think will be a great job with better hours (and the resultant lower pay, but still a substantial sum) that will teach me things I couldn't learn at the firm. And I won't spend my evenings and weekends thinking about billable hours or originations.
Hope this works out. I'll let you know.

Congratulations on the next phase.
I am a long-time lurker (and fellow attorney) delurking to say congratulations on your move!
I also write a lifestyle blog (and used to write a beauty blog), so do stop by sometime at citygirllifestyle.blogspot.com!
Congrats again!
How exciting! Good luck. Do you get any time off between jobs?
Oh, mazel tov! I'm thrilled for you! Best of luck on the new job!
Good luck, APL! I hope the new gig is everything you want it to be.
I'm a long time lurker, I've been reading your blog for over a year. I've often marveled at your ability to raise children and work at a law firm (I'm a first year associate at a large firm). This sounds exactly like a move I would like to make in the future. I look forward to hearing how this new position will allow for more balance in your life. Good luck!
I'll admit that I was leaning on you for support in knowing that the firm/motherhood thing can be done. (A law clerk w/ a 3 month old starting at Huge Firm this fall). But I am totally interested in seeing how you transition from litigation to an in-house position. Hopefully it's just as much fun but you'll have a better quality of life. Looking forward to seeing how it goes.
Good luck to you!
Good luck in your new position!
Best of luck! May you find your bliss.
APL, I feel sure this will be a great choice! Best of luck in the new job!!
congratulations!
Congratulations & Good Luck!
Congratulations! May the angry children enjoy your presence and not tussle on your bed on every one of your evenings off (perhaps strike a deal for every other?).
GOOD.FOR.YOU!
Your sanity and your family will thank you!
Hooray for less hours, and hopefully less stress!
Phew! For a second I thought you were dumping me by blog. :)
Congrats on the new relationship!
CONGRATULATIONS
Best of luck to you!!
nsah: that would be so much worse than Britney's text message to K-Fed, eh?
Best wishes to you! I think it's awesome that you found a position that better suits your needs.
I also thought you were going to stop blogging. What a relief!
Wow, go you!! Hope it goes really, really well.
My guess is you will learn to love it. The thing I hated the most about firm life was the Billable Hour. It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.
I left practice a few years ago to pursue an "alternative legal career" and it was the best thing I ever did. Huge leap, sure. But ultimately it allowed me to become happy and fulfilled. I highly recommend it! Congrats and good luck!
Congrats on coming to work for the man. Depending on what you're doing though, a gov't gig can be just as consuming. It's all a matter of how consuming you let it be. It'll fill your weekends and nights if you let it, and when it does there's only the GS for you there.
The upside is that you get to do really cool shit that sometimes can be moderately important and fun to tell your kids about.
You know I'm doing the happy dance for you!
Oh, hooray!! That is awesome, awesome, awesome!!
I love working for the Region's Biggest Employer. Feel free to talk to me about it. Yay for family time and no tyranny of the billable hour! and for doing good work you can feel good about!
Congratulations! I hope you have a blast at the new job with Biggest Employer. And an even bigger blast every weekend.
Good for you! Enjoy your new digs.
Congrats! Good luck with the transition.
