Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight

It's 8:19 on Christmas Eve as I type this post. It was a wonderful day in the Angry household. In the morning, AB and I watched Charlotte's Web, the version I remember from when I was a kid. Then around 10:30, I helped AB get dressed for his first visit to church. NSAH and AB went to the 11:00 service, which included a children-performed nativity story. Apparently AB was very good during the entire hour-plus-long service. I later asked him what his favorite part was, and he said, "When the baby Jesus was crying." (There was a real baby playing the part, and he or she needed to be escorted out and soothed, NSAH told me later.) My son, the sadist.

Their return home from church coincided nicely with the brief visit of some family members, who came bearing gifts from Krispy Kreme:

Aren't those the cutest? We each had one, and we're leaving one out for Santa tonight (which means I'll be fighting NSAH for it).

During AB's nap, I baked some amaretto brownies (gift for my uncle). And when AB woke up, I melted a bag of dark chocolate/raspberry chips and we dipped in Animal Crackers, sugar wafers, and dried apricots. Well, mostly I did the dipping, and AB decorated the chocolate masterpieces with his shaker of nonpareils. ("Sprinkles," he called them.) He was very serious about his job, too. He didn't try to sneak any of the goodies, and he was even cautious about having one when I offered it to him.

And now he's in bed. And ALB is in bed. And NSAH is in the basement wrapping my presents. And I am in bed watching Love, Actually, one of my favorite Christmas movies. Not in bed for the night, though. Around 10, we'll put the presents under the tree and stuff stockings. (And there is the matter of that lone remaining snowman donut....)

Merry Christmas to all. I leave you with this parting wisdom from my movie:

"No one's ever gonna shag you if you cry all the time."

I LOVE LOVE LOVE "Love, Actually." I *always* cry like a baby during the funeral scene when Liam Neeson chokes up and calls his wife "my darling girl." Every single time.

And every viewing, I get mad with Hugh Grant for being such a stuck-up prat. And I stare in wonder that Alan Rickman would risk losing the love of Emma Thompson for that stick-like roundheels in his office.

Damn. Now I have to go watch "Love, Actually." :)

If you haven't yet seen it, "Maybe Baby" is much in the same sort of mold with the smashing Hugh Laurie as the male lead. It's very good, though not set at Christmas.

AB's not a sadist -- he's rejoicing in Jesus' humanity. =)

To be fair to AB, he asked me on the way home if they all lived happily ever after. I had to distill a lot of theological controversies into that answer.

I liked Love, Actually, but if I were to watch it again, I'd probably find myself jumping through the screen to give Laura Linney a hug. Then I'd offer to watch her brother for a while so she could go get the nice adult intimacy she so richly deserves.

It's one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time too! I tried to rent it tonight and couldn't get it! I was so bummed!

We went to see The Holiday yesterday and it wasn't bad. I think you might like it, very cute and corny and perfect for Christmas.

It's getting a little too late for Merry Christmas, so how about an early Happy New Year to you and the whole Angry family?

I usually have an excessive skepticism of remakes of movies I enjoyed as a child, but I will tell you the new Charlotte's Web is terrific, too. Maybe just because I really enjoy Dakota Fanning. What a talented kid.
