How come AB has no problem with me cutting his fingernails or toenails (in fact, he likes to watch me work as he holds out each finger), but he freaks the hell out when I cut his hair with either clippers or scissors?! The boy makes no sense. I was the complete opposite as a kid: hated when my mom cut my fingernails, but didn't mind having my hair cut at all.

No blood was drawn during tonight's haircut, though you would've thought I'd butchered him from all the screams and shuddering.

My kid shreiks when I give him a haircut. I am thinking of taking him to a barber for the next one just so someone else can traumatize him.

The last time I cut his nails though, he was totally fine. Maybe its a boy thing.

No clue. Some things just freak them out. Poor AB, it's no fun being scared. Poor Mama, it's no fun cutting the hair of a screaming boy.

Muffin Man was just the same. I ended up taking him to Cartoon Cuts and the combination of watching The Wiggles during and getting a fistful of lollipops after made it all less traumatic for him.

Which is to say, turn on The Wiggles while you cut AB's hair and give him a fistful of lollipops after.

I think it's 'cause he's already figured out he wants to be a rock star and that chicks dig the long hair. So every haircut is a step backwards from his future plans of debauched hedonism. That would make me cry too.

I keep waiting for Isaac to out grow his intense fear of haircuts, but it's not getting any better. And we've tried it all--tv, bribery, the kids cuts places--none of it stops the screaming. He doesn't much like the fingernail cutting either though.

When my son was a toddler, his dad took him to the barbershop for his first haircut. We explained it to him beforehand, but when they returned, my boy had cried so hard that he broke blood vessels in his cheeks. When I asked him why, he said that scissors will cut and cutting hurts. He thought that because I had tried to teach him to stay away from scissors, it meant that cutting his hair would hurt too. I felt really sorry for him!

Corndog has it just right, in my view. Your son has a precocious fashion sense. Not at all inconsistent with liking a manicure.

BTW, you of all people would appreciate my one-of-a-kind Pedro Martinez pictures on my Sunday blog post.

I think Corndog's gotta be right, because AB likes putting on his sunglasses, and when I ask if he's gonna be a rock star, he answers, "No, I am a rock star!"

And Liz, I had him in front of the TV with the Simpsons on, and promised him ice cream afterward, and he still screamed and squirmed. Whatever.

Have you tried having him sit in NSAH's lap?
